Overview
An expert at bringing great texts vividly to the present, David Bobée tackles a monument of literature to reveal its full political power. With Lorenzaccio, here is a new classic dusted off through head-on theatre, striking imagery and collective energy.
In Florence in 1537, the young Lorenzo de Médicis feigns debauchery in order to get close to Duke Alexandre and prepare his assassination. Yet his solitary act, meant to free the city, reveals above all the collective powerlessness and cowardice of the republican elites.
With Lorenzaccio, David Bobée offers a powerful reinterpretation of the Romantic masterpiece, built on a deliberate political gesture.
His adaptation merges the versions of George Sand and Alfred de Musset, restoring its rightful place to women's heritage (matrimoine), long rendered invisible.
As always with the director, the strength of the show lies notably in a striking set design, a metaphor for a city in ruins, and in an intergenerational and inclusive cast.
