Hillai Govreen & Artur Vidal

Jazz and Choro — Hillai Govreen and Artur Vidal fuse their musical universes, blending jazz improvisation and Brazilian tradition through a captivating and intimate performance.

New York-based clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Hillai Govreen joins Rio de Janeiro-based seven-string guitarist Artur for an intimate exploration of the musical links between jazz and choro.

Coming from a rich musical family tradition, Artur possesses a deep knowledge of traditional repertoire as well as the singular rhythmic language of the seven-string guitar.

Hillai, meanwhile, is influenced by numerous Brazilian composers and brings her background in jazz improvisation and contemporary creative music.

Together, they blend lyrical melodies, improvisation and the rhythmic richness of Brazilian music to create a sonic universe that is both deeply rooted in tradition and open to spontaneous discovery.

Drawing inspiration from Brazilian instrumental music, South American composers, the jazz repertoire and their own arrangements, the duo highlights the affinities and bridges between these different musical worlds.

Through the warm resonances of the seven-string guitar and the expressive voice of the clarinet and saxophone, their performance celebrates dialogue, listening and the power of music to transcend languages, cultures and geographical borders.
