Overview
Le Château de Barbe-Bleue Béla Bartók A hallucinatory vocal tête-à-tête carried here by two giants of the operatic stage.
Cast Elīna Garanča | Judith Christian Van Horn | Barbe-Bleue Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo Lio Kuokman | conductor Programme In the first part of the programme Bartók Allegro barbaro, orchestral arrangement by Giancarlo Chiaramello Kodály Danses de Galánta In a few words When he composed Le Château de Barbe-Bleue, Bartók was at that time at the confluence of his discovery of Debussy's music and his ethnomusicological research into popular repertoires.
His only opera would be the happy fusion of the two influences. Structured in seven moments corresponding to each of the castle's doors, Le Château de Barbe-Bleue is a powerful piece, an existential drama in which romantic love is laid bare in a compact form.
But this economy is only on the surface for anyone who knows the orchestral forces and the vocal feats the work demands. A hallucinatory and gripping tête-à-tête, a metaphor for solitude and the difficulty of the love relationship.
