Overview
LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS - Ballet Julien Lestel Within the lineage of Jirí Kylián, Ohad Naharin and Crystal Pite, choreographer Julien Lestel forges a distinctive style with his resolutely modern, unique, aesthetic and powerful creations. ENCOUNTERS The choreography opens on a simple, almost ritual image: 10 dancers, arranged in a circle, form a silent community. This circle, a figure of unity and equality, becomes the starting point of a wordless dialogue. Each dancer seems at once present for themselves and attentive to the others.
From this shared attention, dance springs forth. What was at first a juxtaposition of individuals becomes a collective, fluid and organic writing. The initial circle never truly disappears; it transforms into a living dynamic, a symbol of a community in motion. LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS Commissioned by the Centre Culturel Tjibaou in Nouméa to mark the centenary of the premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris in 1913, Julien Lestel offers his own version, drawing on Kanak culture. Set to Igor Stravinsky's original score, the ballet is composed of two parts, made up of a sequence of incantatory scenes and ritual games that lead, in the first, to the intense dance of the earth, in which the men question the future according to the rites, and, in the second, to the great sacred dance in which a woman is chosen to be delivered to the gods. "Julien Lestel draws on traditional Melanesian culture and retains the original depth of the cult work, with Igor Stravinsky's score." – La Provence Choreography: Julien LESTEL Production: Alexandra Cardinale OPERA BALLET PRODUCTION Assistant choreographer: Gilles PORTE Lighting: Lo-Ammy VAIMATAPAKOEva Bégué, Maxence Chippaux, Allan Géreaud, Roxane Katrun, Ingrid le Breton, Inès Pagotto, Louis Plazer, Justin Rioult, Timothée Rouby, Mara Whittington.
