This sung ballet was premiered there on 7 June 1933 by the singer Lotte Lenya, with choreography by Balanchine.
The work had been commissioned by a young, wealthy Englishman for performance by the Ballets 33 company, which had just been founded by George Balanchine and Boris Kochno.
Cocteau was for a time considered for the libretto, which was ultimately written by Brecht (who later disowned his text). The score is infused with various popular genres (waltz, foxtrot…) within a symphonic structure in the grand manner of the cantata.
Nina Stemme, the greatest Isolde of her generation, is also an exceptional recitalist, equally at ease with the visionary modernism of Mahler and the ironic detachment of Weill. Production Théâtre des Champs-Élysées
