Overview
Presented by La Compagnie de L'Elan. Text: Alfred de Musset. Directed by Bernard Lefebvre. Cast: Julia Beauquesne, Mireille Carozzi, Naïm Hamou, Jonathan Le Guillou, Beatrice Murtinger. Create. Love. Destroy. And start again.
With this play, Musset temporarily sets aside the genre of the proverb to give a comedy in alexandrines. A count neglects his young and beautiful wife to pursue his advances on her lady's maid, Louison.
Virtuous, the pretty chambermaid tries to fend off his advances by pitting against the count a rustic but sincere rival.
Going beyond the usual stakes of vaudeville, Musset places at the centre of the play the social injustice of which his heroine is a victim: the innocent Louison can find a way out only in her own greatness of soul.
