L’Amour sorcier

L’Amour sorcier takes place among the gypsies of Andalusia, in an atmosphere of superstition and witchcraft. It depicts the love of Candelas and Carmelo troubled by the appearance of the ghost of a young man who, until his death, was Candelas's fiancé. The spell will be definitively broken when Candelas manages to divert the revenant's jealous attention towards another young girl. By bringing the dead closer to the living, this legend covers other traditional tales, such as those relating to the invitation of the deceased to rituals celebrating the advent of spring. These ceremonies, in their function of regenerating the world, use fire as a symbol of the supremacy of light over darkness. This is recalled by the danza ritual de fuego composed by Manuel de Falla to ward off the jealous spirit and allow Candelas to live in the light of a new love. Following this, the revenant will detach himself from her to enter into a funereal marriage with a sacrificed young girl. Without fully stripping L'Amour sorcier of its Andalusian picturesque, I have focused on the perpetual cycle of death and life. Through this choice, and adopting a universalising approach, the main roles are partly performed by all the dancers. Finally, the stage is covered with ash-coloured petals. Black roses that love has fled, before it returns.
