Le Carnaval de Venise, an opera-ballet by André Campra created in 1699 while the severe reign of Louis XIV was far from over, wonderfully blends French and Italian tastes with delightful fantasy.
It transports us to the Most Serene Republic for a detailed review of the most whimsical characters and a very unexpected session of theatre within theatre, or rather, Italian opera within French lyrical comedy.
The whole concludes with an unbridled ball, a lovely pièce de résistance for the ensemble Il Caravaggio and its musical director Camille Delaforge.
