Monty Alexander is an emblematic figure in jazz, whose career spans over six decades. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1944, he began playing piano at the age of four, soaking up local melodies early on before discovering American jazz. His move to Miami in the late 1950s, then to New York, marked the beginning of his international recognition. He quickly garnered attention for his unique style, fusing the elegance of mainstream jazz with the infectious cadences of reggae and calypso, a signature that still distinguishes him today. Among his most famous albums are « Montreux Alexander Live!  » (1976), recorded with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Milt Jackson, which captured the energy of his live performances, and « Jamento  » (1978), which affirmed his exploration of Caribbean roots.

Monty Alexander's style is characterised by impressive technical virtuosity, an ability to improvise with disconcerting fluidity, and an innate sense of rhythm. He is often compared to jazz piano giants like Oscar Peterson for his power and clarity, while bringing an undeniable personal touch, imbued with his Jamaican origins.
