8 op. 88 In brief One of the oldest symphonic ensembles in Great Britain owes much of its current prestige to the years Vassily Petrenko spent at its helm (2006–2021).

He restored the orchestra to its former lustre by refining its sound, which has since brought it awards and both public and critical success. Today it is under the direction of the Swiss-Venezuelan conductor Domingo Hindoyan.

Equally at home in the symphonic and operatic repertoire, he performs with the great houses of the world, including the Paris Opera, where he conducted Rigoletto in 2024.

For this Parisian visit, he has chosen an unusual programme combining the Four Interludes from Britten's Peter Grimes, a major figure in twentieth-century English music, with Martucci's cycle Canzone dei Ricordi, performed here by Sonya Yoncheva, and Dvořák's Symphony No.

8, which, with its many solos for woodwind, is, in the composer's own words, 'a pretty symphony of birds'. Productions Internationales Albert Sarfati
