Saint Etienne are one of the most beloved pop groups among British audiences, and one of the most cherished.
Formed in 1990 by Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, both from Croydon, Saint Etienne enjoyed meteoric success with their debut single, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", a cover of Neil Young's song that quickly became a club anthem. Stanley and Wiggs were soon joined by vocalist Sarah Cracknell, who made her debut on the 1991 single "Nothing Can Stop Us" and on the first album, "Fox Base Alpha", nominated the same year for the Mercury Music Prize.
Their second album, "So Tough", reached the UK top 10 and was followed by a major tour of the United Kingdom. In 1994, Saint Etienne became the first group in history to be broadcast live on television from the Glastonbury Festival. Tours of Europe, the United States, Japan and Australia soon followed.
The group's latest album, "International" – their 13th, released in September 2025 – was greeted enthusiastically and returned them to the British top 10. Although it is their most recent studio album, Saint Etienne are not splitting up and are currently planning a full programme of concerts for 2026.
