Schubert's string quartet La Jeune Fille et la Mort builds on a lied written a few years earlier, in which Death appears to a terrified young girl as a consoling rest. It is 1824: the composer knows he is condemned and throws his last strength into his work. This tension between dread and appeasement runs through the entire score. The first movement strikes with its tragic urgency. The second, variations on the theme of the lied, establishes a calm gravity, like a meditation on the inevitable. The Scherzo, a sinister and nervous farce, revives the tension, while the Finale, a breathless danse macabre, seems to race towards an inexorable fate. A true inner theatre where human fragility and fatality confront one another, the quartet was poorly received at its premiere. It triumphed only after the composer's death, like a tragic echo of Schubert's own life.
