We are in 1824: the musician knows he is condemned and throws his final strength into work. This tension between terror and appeasement runs through the entire score. The first movement strikes with its tragic urgency.

The second, variations on the lied theme, establishes calm gravity, like meditation on the inevitable. The Scherzo, sinister and nervous farce, reactivates tension, while the Finale, a panting danse macabre, seems to rush toward an inexorable fate.

A true inner theatre where human fragility confronts fate, the quartet was poorly received at its creation. It triumphs only after the composer's death, like a tragic echo to Schubert's life.
