100th anniversary of Garbis Aprikian Born on October 6, 1926, in Alexandria, Egypt, a country then marked by great cultural openness, Garbis Aprikian established himself as a major figure in Armenian diaspora music. Nurtured from a young age by the history and epic of his people, he very early developed an artistic sensibility deeply rooted in the transmission and defence of a culture. Arriving in France in 1953 thanks to a scholarship for the École Normale de Musique de Paris, he continued his training there and met Olivier Messiaen, whose influence would be decisive. At the crossroads of traditions, his work offers a singular synthesis: Western harmonic writing placed at the service of melodies from Armenian folklore, in an approach he himself described as a “noble translation” of tradition. Conductor of the Sipan-Komitas choirs from 1953 to 2009, Garbis Aprikian dedicated a large part of his life to promoting Armenian music in Europe. On the occasion of Garbis Aprikian's centenary, Eva Zaïcik, mezzo-soprano, David Haroutunian, violinist, and Xénia Maliarévitch, pianist – already brought together around the Mayrig project and a first album dedicated to the composer – continue their musical adventure with a new programme enriched with new pieces and new arrangements by Nicolas Worms, with a view to a second recording. In the first part, three students from the École Normale, recipients of a scholarship dedicated to the transcription of excerpts from one of Garbis Aprikian's major works, La Naissance de David de Sassoun, will present their creation.
