About — The artist
Antimatter is a British gothic rock band, the long-running solo project of founding member Mick Moss. It began as a duo formed with Duncan Patterson, former bassist and composer of Anathema, by combining two solo projects pursued in parallel. The duo released three albums, Saviour, Lights Out and Planetary Confinement, before Patterson left the group in 2005 to found Íon. Moss continued Antimatter on his own, with the fourth album, Leaving Eden, in 2007, followed by further records, including Fear of a Unique Identity, The Judas Table and Welcome To The Machine, up to Black Market Enlightenment in 2018.
In a 2016 article for the Krakow Post, the late American journalist Dewey Gurall noted that the early albums leaned towards trip-hop, with many female vocals (think Portishead or Zero 7), whereas this electronic atmosphere has since been integrated into art rock, prog, metal, folk, shoegaze, a touch of classic British pop and even grunge, without straying from a darkwave sensibility. The lead vocals are handled entirely, and with control, by Mick. Gurall judged that this blend, which might seem confused on paper, results in something both entirely original and moving.
