About — The artist
Gregorio Allegri (born Gregorio Costantino in 1582 in Rome — died on 17 February 1652, in the same city) was an Italian priest, church chorister and composer.
He is regarded as one of the most important Roman composers of his time. He is the author of a very famous Miserere (Psalm 50). He lived mainly in Rome.
His elder brother, Domenico Allegri, also entered the priesthood and was likewise a composer (at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere). The son of a coachman named Costantino, he took the name Allegri from the first name of his grandfather, Allegro.
