About — The artist
Marc-Antoine Charpentier, born in Île-de-France in 1643 and who died in Paris on 24 February 1704, was a French baroque composer and singer.
He is known for his sacred music compositions, in particular his motets and masses. Charpentier worked for the Abbaye de Montmartre, the Abbaye-aux-Bois, the Abbaye de Port Royal de Paris, the Duchesse de Guise, the Jesuits, as well as for numerous patrons in Paris, for whom he composed the bulk of his sacred music. Through the scale and quality of his sacred and secular output, Charpentier ranks among the most important composers of the baroque period in France. His style was influenced by Italian music. Charpentier also composed instrumental music, operas and ballets.
His sacred and theatrical music rivalled that of his contemporary Jean-Baptiste Lully.
