About — The artist
Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band, originally from Amadora and formed in 1989 under the name Morbid God by vocalist and lyricist Fernando Ribeiro and bassist João "Ares" Pedro.
Operating within a black metal register and marked by multiple line-up changes in their early days, the band changed their name in 1992 and recorded their first two albums, Wolfheart (1995) and Irreligious (1996), which immediately propelled them as one of the leading representatives of gothic metal. Following a chaotic period marked by the tumultuous departure of Ares and two albums with an experimental sound, the lineup stabilized around Fernando Ribeiro, keyboardist Pedro Paixão, guitarist Ricardo Amorim, and drummer Miguel "Mike" Gaspar. The latter left the band in 2020 after a series of albums that regularly achieved success, notably The Antidote (2003), Memorial (2006), and Extinct (2015).
Although primarily associated with gothic metal, the band's constantly evolving musical style also fluctuates across songs or albums between several genres. The lyrics are written mostly in English, but certain songs, and even the entirety of the album 1755, are in Portuguese. The themes of the songs were initially inspired by occultism and fiction in general, before turning toward subjects inspired by society, with the albums then often structured around a main theme.
Due to their international success, the status acquired by their first two albums, and their longevity, Moonspell is considered the leading representative of the Portuguese metal scene.
