Overview
An incandescent energy runs through this programme: that of music which questions the figure of the hero, soloistic virtuosity and the freedom of form.
The overture Coriolan opens the evening with the inner conflict of an exile torn between fury and resignation – one of the most striking psychological portraits in Beethoven.
Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 brings a luminous contrast: the clarinet asserts itself as a solo voice in its own right, and Pierre Génisson eloquently reveals its full expressive range.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 concludes the programme on an unexpected note: not triumphant heroism, but a freedom of form played with irony and mischief.
Conducted by Raphaël Merlin – for a long time cellist of the Quatuor Ébène, now at the helm of the Orchestre de chambre de Genève. A chamber musician at heart, whose sensitivity to dialogue and colour promises a subtle and energetic reading.
