Overview
GISELLEJohan IngerPalais GarnierDuration: 1h50 with 1 intervalForget thatched roofs, forests of Wilis and white tutus!
Johan Inger's Giselle, returning to the Palais Garnier three years after IMPASSE entered the repertoire, draws on the famous Romantic ballet but reimagines it with a more contemporary dramaturgy.
Whereas in the original version by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, Giselle was a peasant girl and Bathilde a princess, here the two women, both in love with Albrecht, come across as free-spirited and observant.
That doesn't stop them facing the same turmoil, such as jealousy and revenge. Set to a new score by Grégoire Hetzel, the Swedish choreographer explores, over two acts, maternal love, friendship and passion alike.
By focusing on female strength, desire and loss, he shows two sides of love: its beauty as well as its destructive power. The Étoiles, Premières Danseuses, Premiers Danseurs and the Corps de Ballet Music recorded by the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris
