When Nedezhda Zhdanova set out to devote a documentary to Grigory Sokolov in 2016, she could only interview his close associates, colleagues and disciples. The title of the film? "An Interview That Never Took Place". That is because the virtuoso, shunning anything that might divert him from his quest for musical absolute, grants no interviews, does not pose for photographers and does not play the media game. Yet although he obviously communicates on no social network, a vast community follows him. They will tell you he is the greatest living pianist. Always there, never knowing what they will hear, his devotees are sure of only one thing: the maestro will be generous well beyond the official programme. As usual, a bouquet of six encores will close the evening.
