The Trojan War has taken place. The King of Crete, Idomeneo, returns home after ten years away, but on his way he encounters a terrible storm. To appease Neptune, he vows to sacrifice the first person he meets on the shore, never suspecting that it will be... his own son!
It is to this libretto by Giambattista Varesco that the Prince-Elector Karl-Theodor of Bavaria commissions from Mozart an opera seria for the Munich carnival of 1781. The composer pours into it all the ardour of his 25 years and magnifies the orchestra and the chorus, drawing inspiration from the model of French tragédie lyrique. The result is a music by turns tender or grand, strewn with arias of dazzling beauty.
After Œdipe and Pelléas et Mélisande, Wajdi Mouawad returns to the Paris Opéra to stage Idomeneo.
