Idomeneo Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Opéra Bastille Duration: 3h15 with 1 intermission Language: Italian Surtitles: French / English The Trojan War has taken place. The king of Crete, Idomeneo, returns home after ten years away, but finds a terrible storm in his path.
To appease Neptune, he promises to sacrifice the first person he meets on the shore, unaware that it will be... his own son!
It is on this libretto by Giambattista Varesco that the Elector Karl-Theodor of Bavaria commissions Mozart with an opera seria for the carnival of Munich in 1781.
The composer puts all the fervor of his 25 years into it and magnifies the orchestra and chorus by drawing inspiration from the French lyric tragedy model. The result is music that is alternately tender or grandiose, sprinkled with arias of blazing beauty.
After Oedipus and Pelléas and Mélisande, Wajdi Mouawad returns to the Paris Opera to direct Idomeneo.
