Overview

Kaguyahime Jo Kanamori - The Tokyo Ballet Palais Garnier Running time: 2h40 with 2 intervals In Japan, an old man finds in a bamboo stalk a tiny girl no bigger than a thumb, who transforms into a woman of dazzling beauty.

Nicknamed Kaguyahime (princess of light), she is courted by numerous suitors, including the Emperor of Japan. But having come from the Moon, she is only passing through Earth.

Drawing on one of the oldest works of Japanese literature, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, written in the 10th century, choreographer Jo Kanamori created in 2023 a three-act ballet that follows the rhythm of the seasons, in fairytale tableaux highlighted by subtle lighting effects.

At the invitation of the Opéra national de Paris, The Tokyo Ballet, founded in 1964, performs Kaguyahime for the first time at the Palais Garnier, set to Claude Debussy's shimmering music, which delicately matches the poetry of the legend. Guest company Recorded music
