In brief
The popular music of Naples in the 17th and 18th centuries, left for too long in the shadow of its learned and sophisticated elder sister (Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Corelli, Vivaldi, etc.), holds a treasury of invention and emotion that we are only just beginning to rediscover. Naples was also the birthplace of the commedia dell'arte, influencing many pieces drawn from popular operas or plebeian songs, becoming a true stage on which life, in all its exuberance or tragedy, plays out. Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata have made the revival of this repertoire a specialty and, above all, a passion.
