17th and 18th-century Neapolitan popular music, which remained too long in the shadow of its erudite and scholarly elder sister (Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Corelli, Vivaldi, etc.), possesses treasures of invention and emotion that we are only just beginning to rediscover. Naples was also the birthplace of commedia dell’arte, thus influencing many pieces, stemming from popular operas or plebeian songs, becoming a true stage where life in all its boisterousness or tragedy is played out. Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata have made the resurrection of this repertoire a speciality and, above all, a passion.
