Overview
La Fille mal gardée Frederick Ashton Palais Garnier Running time: 2h05 with 1 interval A rooster and hens, farmhands wielding scythes, headscarves and clogs: such is the bucolic setting of La Fille mal gardée, in which young Lise, a farmer's daughter in love with the peasant Colas, is forever outwitting her mother, who wants to force her to marry another, wealthier but dim-witted man.
Created in July 1789 at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, this oldest ballet in the classical repertoire, originally by Jean Dauberval, took on fresh colours in 1960 in Frederick Ashton's version for the Royal Ballet in London.
Added to the Paris Opera repertoire in 2007, its choreography charms with its freshness and sometimes comical whimsy.
A true virtuoso, Frederick Ashton composes an irresistible gallery of characters set to popular songs and opéra-bouffe tunes, adding here and there a tender, romantic poetry embodied in the delicacy of a pink satin ribbon.
