In 2008, Étoile dancer and choreographer José Martinez adapted Jacques Prévert's poetic screenplay for a ballet he created at the Opéra national de Paris.

Set to the romantic music of Marc-Olivier Dupin, composed for the occasion, it tells the story of Baptiste and Garance's impossible love in a dreamlike Paris of the 1830s.

From the cheerful crowds of the boulevard du Temple to backstage areas and a carnival scene, theatre invades the theatre itself, even spilling out into the grand staircase of the Palais Garnier during the interval.

Bringing together dance, mime and commedia dell'arte, José Martinez draws on the cinematic depth of the film for his choreographic writing, while paying tribute to the magic of live performance.
