Who was Mary Magdalene really? In a musical performance at the crossroads of baroque, oriental, and electronic music, director Ambre Kahan and soprano Julie Fuchs pay tribute to the Mystery surrounding this major figure of Christian mysticism, while firmly dispelling the persistent confusions. On stage, soprano Julie Fuchs embodies the figure of Mary Magdalene in a sound aesthetic with abolished boundaries: baroque strings, analog synthesizers, and Armenian percussion compose a hybrid and immersive universe where Julie Fuchs' voice becomes the guiding thread of a quest both intimate and universal. Around her, the performers work to preserve the Mystery that surrounds her story as much as to affirm the silenced truths. For Mary Magdalene, also known as Mary of Magdala, was never the repentant prostitute that centuries of confusion – with Mary of Bethany, with Mary of Egypt – sought to make of her: she was the apostle of the apostles, and in some gospels, even the companion of Jesus. Refusing categories and oblivion, Magdalena embraces the complexity of a woman who became a symbol of all that power structures wanted to silence.
