The Fairy Queen
L’Ensemble Correspondances invites you to discover one of the jewels of English Baroque music, The Fairy Queen by Purcell, a semi-opera in five acts inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. First staged at the Dorset Garden Theatre in London in 1692, Purcell's adaptation is of rare fantasy: to Shakespeare's already relatively complex plot are added parallel intrigues, whimsical characters, some touching, others burlesque or diabolical. The musical content of the work is prodigious, featuring some of Purcell's most beautiful arias, such as the poignant "O let me weep" or the sparkling "Thrice happy lovers", in which the composer's art of counterpoint and theatricality reaches its height. A singular and enchanting musical fresco, which L’Ensemble Correspondances presents in a concert version, imbued with enchantment and humour.
