Opéra-comique in one act on a libretto by Pierre-René Lemonnier, premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1761.
In 1748, Rameau produced a one-act opera-ballet of extraordinary sensibility: Pygmalion, whose hero, in love with the statue he sculpted, eventually brings it to life through love. A decade later in Vienna, Gluck created a French opéra-comique on an alla turca theme, Le Cadi dupé: in an oriental capital, two lovers wish to marry despite the opposition of the Cadi (the magistrate mayor). With the help of their cunning servant, they devise stratagems to deceive the Cadi, who is thus duped by disguises and comical misunderstandings! Here, brought together in one evening by the verve and invention of Jean-Romain Vesperini, are two pearls of baroque adornment, including a hilarious Cadi almost unknown today!
