Ruy Blas

Presented by La Companie de l'Elan. A man of the people, madly in love with the Queen, unknowingly becomes an accomplice in an infernal plot against the one he loves... At the end of the 17th century, there is something rotten in the kingdom of Spain.

This takes place during the reign of Charles II, an absent king, afflicted with all the defects of inbreeding. His shadow hangs over the play. Victor Hugo, in his preface, tells us: « The illness of the State is in the head, the nobility, which touches it, is the first affected.

» The drama unfolds in a decaying kingdom: Don Salluste, a grandee of Spain, wants to take revenge on the Queen. Ruy Blas, who recently became Don Salluste's valet, is madly in love with the Queen.

Don César, Don Salluste's cousin, leads a bohemian life under the name of Zafari; it is under this name that Ruy Blas knows him and that they previously formed a fraternal friendship.

The Queen is bored, confined in her palace, neglected by an incapable king who spends his time hunting. The intriguing Don Salluste will use Ruy Blas as a pawn to attack the Queen; this mad Don César, having disappeared, reappears in Act IV...
