Wiener Philharmoniker

Wiener Philharmoniker Lorenzo Viotti conductor

The Viennese strings and the zest of Lorenzo Viotti for Strauss and Korngold.

Strauss Suite from Der Rosenkavalier

Korngold Sinfonietta

In a few words

This is a remarkably clever programme, pairing Strauss and Korngold. The Wiener Philharmoniker and Lorenzo Viotti, a brilliant representative of the young generation of conductors, offer a demonstration of their musical heritage. To begin, the Suite from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, in which the Viennese strings are sure to be in their element. Then comes the rare Sinfonietta by Korngold, composed at the astonishing age of 15 in 1912 and premiered precisely by the Wiener under the direction of Felix Weingarten.

Among the Austro-German composers contemporary with Richard Strauss at the beginning of the twentieth century, some saw in the prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold one of its worthy successors. This youthful Sinfonietta indeed displays exceptional technical mastery and genuine poetry, giving the orchestra an impressive chromatic density. The Viennese therefore invite us this evening to revisit 'their' history under the baton of Lorenzo Viotti, who demonstrated his affinity with this repertoire last season in Zurich, conducting the opera Die tote Stadt with lyricism and brilliance.
