This is a devilishly intelligent programme in its association of Strauss and Korngold. The Wiener Philharmoniker and Lorenzo Viotti, a brilliant representative of the young generation of orchestral conductors, thus offer a demonstration of their musical heritage. To begin, the suite from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, where the Viennese strings should truly shine. Then, the rare Sinfonietta by Korngold, composed at the astonishing age of 15 in 1912 and actually premiered by the Wiener Philharmoniker under the direction of Felix Weingarten. Among all the Austro-German composers contemporary with Richard Strauss at the beginning of the 20th century, some saw in the prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold one of his worthy successors. This youthful Sinfonietta indeed demonstrates exceptional technical mastery and genuine poetry, lending the orchestra an impressive chromatic density. The Viennese therefore invite us this evening to revisit "their" history under the baton of Lorenzo Viotti, who demonstrated his affinity with this repertoire last season in Zurich by lyrically and brilliantly conducting the opera Die tote Stadt.
