About — The artist
The Vienna Philharmonic (known in German as "Die Wiener Philharmoniker", in the plural) is Austria's most renowned symphony orchestra.
It was founded in 1842. The orchestra has included members such as Hans Richter, Arthur Nikisch, Franz Schmidt, and Willi Boskovsky. Its members are recruited exclusively from those of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra.
The orchestra's main residence is the Musikverein, a rectangular concert hall with ivory and gold tones and exceptional acoustics. It performs every summer at the Salzburg Festival. Since 1941, the orchestra has given a concert dedicated to the music of the Strauss family every 1st of January: the New Year's Concert.
In 2023, a Bachtrack (en) survey ranked it the second-best orchestra in the world, behind the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Kirill Petrenko.
