Amazzoni

Presented by Le Théâtre du Merlan. This season, the Amazzoni push the boundaries of dance. Hippolyta, Penthesilea, Antiope and the others are summoned to the stage by mischievous Italian choreographer Silvia Gribaudi.

There's no mythological retelling on the programme here, but rather an exploration of how to claim one's existence through presence. Silvia Gribaudi couldn't care less about reminding us who's who; instead, with five dancers, she chooses to ask what it means today to be an Amazon.

On stage, the bodies don't simply occupy space, they expand it. No weapons here, but a celebration of femininities in all their teeming complexity.

Gone are the arrows: the ancient battle becomes here a practice, a training ground for claiming one's place, for persisting without crushing others. In this momentum, the performers turn resistance into rhythm and effort into celebration.

Power is no longer about conquest, but about asserted presence. Radical, irreverent, joyful, these contemporary women transform the fighting spirit of the mythical Amazons into a joyously subversive horde.
