Overview
How can the full power of an orchestra resonate through a single instrument? This audition explores the art of transcription through excerpts from Beethoven's symphonies performed on piano four hands and eight hands. A musical experience that reveals, in a different light, the richness and modernity of his writing.
Beyond its musical and technical possibilities, the clarinet has a rich history, closely tied to the evolution of repertoires and musical styles.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven, the piano classes are presenting an audition devoted to one of the most emblematic composers in the history of music. Through piano transcriptions, the students invite audiences to rediscover his work from an original and unexpected angle.
The programme includes excerpts from symphonies transcribed for piano four hands and eight hands. These arrangements make it possible to recapture, with the resources of the piano, the broad melodic lines, the contrasts and the energy of the orchestral writing.
The move from orchestra to piano naturally transforms the listening experience: the sections draw closer together, the different voices intertwine and each performer becomes part of a single musical ensemble. Working in several hands thus gives the students a particularly rich experience of listening, coordination and collective construction.
These transcriptions also bear witness to the importance of the piano in disseminating Beethoven's music. Before the age of recordings, they made it possible to discover and play the great orchestral works in a more intimate setting.
