The singer Bettine has given up her career for her consuming love, a toxic Baron de Steinberg, whom she followed to Italy and whom she is to marry today.
But while the Notary is already present, the Baron confesses to his servant Calabre that, having relapsed into gambling, he frequents the neighbouring palace, home to a dubious Princess who organises pleasure parties and runs gambling tables, where he continues to squander his fortune. Into this equivocal situation then arrives an old admirer of the Diva, the Marquis Stéfani.
