Le Rouge et le Noir

Presented by La Compagnie de L'ElanD'après Stendhal. Directed by Véronique Daniel. Cast: Véronique Daniel.

Stendhal's undisputed masterpiece, a novel of ambition and already of class struggle, written in a style of great literary beauty: Le rouge et le noir, or the memoirs of Julien Sorel.

The story unfolds through the character of Madame de Rénal, who discovers Julien's supposed memoirs, written during his stay in prison. She makes us relive the tragic destiny of this romantic hero, handsome and consumed by ambition, with whom she was passionately in love.

A demanding and subtle dramatic construction that keeps us on tenterhooks from beginning to end: passion, adultery, filial love, the power of morality and the nobility of feelings, set against a romantic and lyrical backdrop very characteristic of nineteenth-century literature.

A major and essential work whose adaptation and staging scrupulously respect the author's style.
