Strauss: Metamorphosen
Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, "Eroica"
In brief
Richard Strauss completed his Metamorphosen in April 1945; he was then 80 years old and Germany had been painfully defeated. It is therefore a work at once of the end of life and of the end of a world. Having composed so much for the voice, he here offers a piece for string instruments alone. This poignant lament ends with a quotation from the Funeral March of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, "Eroica", like a trace of what German culture has that is greatest. For many, it is self-evident to hear these two pieces, bound by an indefinable atmosphere, in a single impulse.
