55 “Eroica” In a few words Richard Strauss completed his Metamorphosen in April 1945; he was then 80 years old and Germany was painfully defeated. It is therefore a page of both end of life and end of the world.
He who composed so much for the voice offers here a work for string instruments alone. This poignant lament ends with a quotation from the funeral march of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”, as a trace of the greatest aspects of German culture.
