About — The artist

Giacomo Carissimi is an Italian composer, baptised in Marino, near Rome, on 18 April 1605, and who died in Rome on 12 January 1674.

He is one of the most eminent composers of the Baroque period and one of the leading representatives of the Roman school.

He is also one of the first composers to have created the oratorio genre (called dialoghi, or dialogues, before 1640).

His life is poorly documented and only the most important events are certain. To his successors, he remains the greatest composer of the 17th century, "the greatest composer Italy ever produced" according to Pierre Bourdelot and Pierre Bonnet in 1715.
