About — The artist

Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti (in Arabic: يولاندا كريستينا جيجليوتي), known as Dalida (داليدا), born on 17 January 1933 in Cairo and died on 3 May 1987 in Paris, was an Italian-born singer and actress who became a naturalised French citizen.

Born into an Italian family from Calabria, originally from the village of Serrastretta, and settled in Egypt, she took part in beauty contests in the early 1950s and appeared in a few films in Cairo. From 1954 she lived in France, and her first success came in 1956 with Bambino, the French version of the Neapolitan song Guaglione. Building a repertoire of more than seven hundred songs performed in several languages, she became a major figure of French song and enjoyed a popularity that extended well beyond French-speaking audiences.

Among her best-known songs are Gondolier, Come prima, Les Enfants du Pirée, Itsi bitsi petit bikini, Le Jour le plus long, Bang-Bang, Ciao amore, ciao, Le Temps des fleurs, Darla dirladada, Paroles... Paroles..., Il venait d'avoir 18 ans, Gigi l'amoroso, Salma Ya Salama, Laissez-moi danser, Gigi in paradisco and Mourir sur scène. Embracing several musical styles, including twist, pop and raï, she was also one of the first French artists to record disco songs, with J'attendrai and Bésame mucho.

Suffering from depression, brought on in part by a series of personal tragedies, she took her own life a few months after starring in the film Le Sixième Jour. Her private life and her death have made her an icon with a tragic destiny.
