Tchaikovsky
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 "Pathétique"
In a few words
Here is a programme that needs no justification beyond the pleasure of hearing two of the most beautiful works in Tchaikovsky's orchestral repertoire. A luminous, dashing yet nostalgic piece, the violin concerto now ranks among the most popular and most performed concertos around the world. An orchestral introduction prepares the entry of the violin, which, after a climb into the high register with the air of an improvisation, descends to the low register to sing the main and famous theme of the first movement.
As for the Pathétique Symphony, there is no need to introduce this equally famous work, with its melancholy waltz and frenzied march, ending masterfully in the manner of a silent requiem.
