Presented by Sacred Music Notre Dame of Paris. Louis Vierne and Marcel Dupré: two illustrious names that will forever mark 20th-century organ music. Both were connected to Notre-Dame of Paris, but differently.
Vierne was its incumbent from 1900 to 1937, after being assistant to Widor at Saint-Sulpice (1892-1900). Dupré, for his part, was Vierne's assistant at Notre-Dame (1916-1920), before succeeding Widor at Saint-Sulpice in 1934.
Both musicians were therefore intimately familiar with the two mythical instruments of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll that are the organs of Saint-Sulpice and Notre-Dame: they mastered by heart their colors, character, dynamics, poetry… Dimensions that would nourish all their music.
In Dupré, the influence was even stronger: his father was the incumbent of the organ at Saint-Ouen in Rouen, another masterpiece of Cavaillé-Coll. Marcel paid him homage in 1941 in Évocation. The relationship between Vierne and Dupré, initially friendly, eventually deteriorated.
But one point remains in common: both played until their last breath.
