About — The venue

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, commonly known as Notre-Dame, is one of the most emblematic monuments in Paris and France. Situated on the Île de la Cité, in the 4th arrondissement of the capital, it serves as a Catholic place of worship and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Paris, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Its construction began in 1163 under the impetus of Bishop Maurice de Sully, and spanned nearly two centuries, concluding in the mid-14th century around 1345. After the French Revolution, between 1845 and 1867, the cathedral underwent a significant, sometimes controversial, restoration led by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who incorporated new elements and motifs, including a new spire. For these reasons, the style is not entirely uniform: the cathedral exhibits characteristics of both early Gothic and Rayonnant Gothic. The two rose windows adorning each arm of the transept are among the largest in Europe.

The cathedral is linked to numerous episodes in French history. A royal parish church in the Middle Ages, it hosted the arrival of the Holy Crown in 1239, then the coronation of Napoleon I in 1804, the baptism of the last of the Bourbons of France in 1821, as well as the funerals of several presidents of the French Republic (Adolphe Thiers, Sadi Carnot, Paul Doumer, Georges Pompidou, François Mitterrand). It was also under its vaults that a Magnificat was sung during the liberation of Paris in 1944. The 850th anniversary of its construction was celebrated in 2013.

The cathedral has inspired many artistic works, notably Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris, published in 1831, which in turn partly influenced its history. In the early 21st century, Notre-Dame was visited annually by some 13 to 14 million people. The edifice, also a minor basilica, was thus the most visited monument in Europe and one of the most visited in the world until 2019, and one of those that prompted reflection on regulating tourist flows.

The violent fire of April 15, 2019, destroyed the spire and the entire roof covering the nave, choir, and transept. This was the most significant disaster suffered by the cathedral since its construction. Since then, Notre-Dame has been closed to the public. The identical reconstruction of the destroyed or severely damaged parts was decided in 2020. The official reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame will take place on December 7, 2024, and its opening to the public on December 8.
