Overview
For centuries, devotion to the Virgin Mary has inspired some of the most beautiful masterpieces of Western sacred music.
From the great cathedrals of Spain to the chapels of Italy and the churches of the Low Countries, Renaissance composers found in Marian texts a privileged ground on which to display the richness of polyphonic art.
Bringing together works by Josquin des Prés, Victoria, Lassus, Gabrieli, Hassler, Monteverdi and their contemporaries, this programme offers a broad panorama of the evolution of vocal writing between the fifteenth and the early seventeenth century.
Nourished by Gregorian chant, these pieces reveal in turn the subtlety of counterpoint, the art of imitation and the first developments of polychoral writing.
Carried by the voices of the Maîtrise Notre-Dame de Paris, joined by the sonorities of early brass, they celebrate the figure of Mary in a succession of tableaux where fervour, light and sonic splendour intermingle.
