At 82 years old, Germaine Acogny is a phenomenon.
The former "spiritual daughter" of Maurice Béjart, she traces the life and struggles of the celebrated Joséphine Baker: her revolt against racism, her commitment to the Resistance… An encounter of such obvious rightness that it triumphs everywhere.
Gregory Maqoma responds with a creation for twelve dancers from different traditions, uniting their practices in a joyful fraternity that pays tribute to the teaching of Germaine Acogny and her renowned École des sables.
An immemorial echo of Africa, of her youth and her modernity, a telluric whirlwind at a frantic pace, Bantu is a celebration of the strength and beauty of life. Gregory Maqoma also recalls the social realities of the continent.

Germaine Acogny
Germaine Acogny is a Franco-Beninese dancer and choreographer born in 1944 in Porto-Novo. In 1968 she founded her first African dance studio in Dakar, where she developed a synthesis of traditional West African dance and contemporary Western dance.
