About — The artist
Mamoru Fujisawa (藤澤 守, Fujisawa Mamoru), known as Joe Hisaishi (久石 譲, Hisaishi Jō), is a Japanese composer, conductor, pianist, and lyricist born on 6 December 1950 in Nakano, Nagano Prefecture. He is particularly known for composing the music for most of Hayao Miyazaki's and Takeshi Kitano's films.
His stage name was chosen in homage to the American jazz trumpeter and composer Quincy Jones. Indeed, Quincy is transcribed in Japanese as « クインシー (Kuinshī) », and the kanji « 久 » used to write « Hisa » in « Hisaishi » can also be pronounced « Ku » in on'yomi reading. Thus, « 久石 譲 (Hisaishi Jō) » could alternatively be transcribed as « Kuishi Jō » (≈ Quincy Joe).
