About — The artist
Claudio Monteverdi (baptised on 15 May 1567 in Cremona and who died on 29 November 1643 in Venice) was an Italian composer.
His works, mostly vocal, sit at the crossroads of the Renaissance and the baroque. Over his long life, he produced pieces belonging to both the old and the new style and brought about significant changes to the style of his time. He is regarded as one of the creators of opera and, with L'Orfeo, as the author of the genre's first masterpiece. He is also the last great representative of the Italian madrigal school, to which he devoted nine books, as well as the author of a body of polyphonic sacred music, including masses.
