About — The theatre

The Théâtre Essaïon is a performance venue at 6, rue Pierre-au-Lard in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, in the Marais district.

Set up in one of the medieval cellars of the former Hôtel de l'Aigle d'or, it was founded in 1975 at the initiative of a troupe of actors gathered around Régis Santon. This first venture failed for lack of funds.

The venue was then taken over by José Valverde, who staged productions of contemporary plays. In 1987, the actress Alida Latessa succeeded him.

In 1995, a second 70-seat room was created in another vaulted cellar adjoining the first.

In 2003, the theatre became a venue devoted mainly to newly created chanson, repertoire chanson and musical theatre. The small room was converted into a 70-seat cabaret. It hosted, among others, the group Les Goguettes as well as the final concerts of Sophie Makhno.

In January 2006, the team of the Aktéon Théâtre took over the running of the theatre and revived it in the main hall.
