About — The artist
Claude Debussy was a French composer born on 22 August 1862 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and who died on 25 March 1918 in Paris.
By laying the first cornerstone of modern music in 1894 with Prélude à l'Après-midi d'un faune, Debussy immediately placed his work under the seal of the musical avant-garde. He was briefly a Wagnerian in 1889, then a nonconformist for the rest of his life, rejecting all aesthetic academicisms. With La Mer, he renewed the symphonic form; with Pelléas et Mélisande, French opera broke free from the ruts of the lyrical drama tradition, while he imbued chamber music, with his string quartet, with inspired impressionistic accents.
A significant part of his work is for the piano and uses a particularly rich and evocative sound palette. Claude Debussy leaves behind the image of an original creator. His influence would be decisive in the history of music.
