About — The artist
Maurice Ravel was a French composer born in Ciboure on March 7, 1875, and who died in Paris 16e on December 28, 1937.
Along with his elder Claude Debussy, Ravel was the most influential figure in French music at the beginning of the 20th century. His body of work, modest in quantity (eighty-six original works, twenty-five orchestrated or transcribed works), is the result of varied influences ranging from Couperin and Rameau to the colours and rhythms of jazz, including the recurring influence of Spain.
Characterised by its great diversity of genres, Ravel's musical output generally respects classical tradition and spans a creative period of over forty years, making it contemporary with those of Fauré, Debussy, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Gershwin. The vast majority of his works have entered the concert repertoire. Among these, the symphonic ballet Daphnis et Chloé (1909-1912), the Boléro (1928), the two piano concertos for the left hand (1929-1930) and in G major (1929-1931), and the orchestration of Mussorgsky's Tableaux d'une exposition (1922) are those that have most contributed to his international renown. Recognised as a master of orchestration and a perfectionist craftsman, this man of complex personality never lost a sensitivity and expressiveness which, according to Le Robert, allowed him to evoke in his work both “the most subtle games of intelligence” and “the most secret outpourings of the heart”.
