About — The artist
Freda Josephine Baker (née McDonald; June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was a French-American dancer, singer, and actress, as well as a spy for the French Resistance. Her career was primarily in Europe, mostly in France. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 French silent film, Siren of the Tropics, directed by Mario Nalpas and Henri Étiévant.
Early in her career, Baker was one of the most celebrated performers in the revues of the Folies Bergère in Paris. Her performance in the 1927 revue, Un vent de folie, caused a sensation. Her costume, consisting of a short skirt of artificial bananas and a pearl necklace, became an iconic image of the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she renounced her American citizenship and became French after her marriage to industrialist Jean Lion in 1937. She adopted 12 children, whom she called the Rainbow Tribe, and raised them in France.
Joséphine Baker aided the French Resistance during World War II and also worked with the British Secret Intelligence Service and the United States Office of Strategic Services. After the war, she received the Médaille de la Résistance, the Croix de Guerre, and was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle. She is also recognised for her contributions to the civil rights movement. On November 30, 2021, Baker was inducted into the Panthéon in Paris, becoming the first black woman to receive one of France's highest honours.
