Ludwig van Beethoven (/ludvig van betɔvœn/ ; in German: /ˈluːtvɪç fan ˈbeːtˌhoːfn̩/ ) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor born on 15 or 16 December 1770 in Bonn and died on 26 March 1827 in Vienna.
The last great representative of Viennese Classicism (after Gluck, Haydn, and Mozart), Beethoven prepared the evolution towards Romanticism in music and influenced Western music for much of the 19th century. Unclassifiable (“You give me the impression of a man with several heads, several hearts, several souls,” Haydn told him around 1793), his art was expressed through different musical genres, and although his symphonic music is the main source of his popularity, he also had a considerable influence on piano writing and chamber music.
Overcoming, through sheer willpower, the trials of a life marked by deafness which struck him at the age of twenty-seven, celebrating in his music the triumph of heroism and joy when fate imposed isolation and misery upon him, he was rewarded posthumously by Romain Rolland's affirmation: “He is much more than the foremost of musicians. He is the most heroic force in modern art.” An expression of unalterable faith in humanity and a deliberate optimism, an affirmation of a free and independent artist, Beethoven's work makes him one of the most significant figures in the history of music.
